What is Shadow Work? And why would anyone want to do that?

I’ve been hearing these questions since I first became intrigued with Shadow Work in 1988. And after more than 30 years of devoting myself full time to Shadow Work (by founding Shadow Work Seminars Inc. in 1994 and trademarking the term Shadow Work®) I have discovered an overall view of the whole Shadow Work field I’d like to share with you.

If you picture yourself outside in the daylight, and you look around, you’ll see what’s called the Surface World. Anything you can see “in the light” is a part of that Surface World.

But there’s a Shadow World beneath the surface which you can’t see.

Most of humanity’s everyday needs can be met using what’s in the Surface World. There’s air to breathe, water to drink, food to eat and materials for building a shelter.

But for the needs that can’t be met directly from the Surface World, humanity has learned to go beneath the surface by diving under the water or digging into the ground. And that means entering into the Shadow World, where things are in the dark.

We only venture into the Shadow World when we can’t meet our needs from the Surface World. Really, why would we go there if we don’t need to?

So we don’t really need to enter the Shadow World until we can’t meet our needs from the Surface World.

Imagine you are out in nature, walking by the water, and suddenly you are approached by a bear that can outrun you. You are going to want something to defend yourself. Maybe there’s a rock you can throw, or a stick you can swing. Maybe you can outswim the bear for a while. But pepper spray would be great to have in your back pocket, just in case. However pepper spray comes in metal cans and those metals are mined from under the ground. Maybe you could use your cellphone to call for help, but each phone is composed of hundreds of parts, most of which came from deep within the earth.

I believe the same thing to be true inside our minds. In our conscious awareness, we have a Surface World composed of all the things we customarily recognize. We have our everyday thoughts. We have our feelings. We have our dreams and plans. We wake up with some energy for the day.

But as Sigmund Freud once said, “The mind is like an iceberg. It floats with one-seventh of its bulk above the water.” Freud thought that six-sevenths of our minds are beneath the surface, in the shadow. Carl Jung believed in the “Collective Unconscious” by which he meant the same thing.

So when we are chased by negative thoughts and feelings that can outrun us, we are going to want something to defend ourselves. But to find our internal pepper spray we must enter the Shadow World.

Maybe we start by talking to friends or a relationship partner, asking what they see that we might not see about ourselves. We might be in the dark about things inside ourselves that others can see like they are in broad daylight. Or maybe we read a self-help book, or we learn to journal, or we seek out our deeper emotions in poetry, music, theater or art. These are all good ways to start digging. Maybe we find a therapist or join a support group or attend a personal growth weekend. These are all great ways of exploring the Shadow World.

Often, this process starts out looking like we are digging a hole in search of what’s wrong with us. But at some point we also discover some new resources down there. We might find a gem or two. We might even strike gold. And just realizing that we have good things buried in the dark can give us great motivation and more energy to deal with our troubles on the surface.

Human History

Let’s look at a little history about where humanity has gotten its energy for powering more and more advanced civilizations. We started on the Surface World. We found food and water on the surface. We ate the plants, fruits and nuts that grew above the ground. We hunted the animals around us. We burned the wood for heat and cooking. And so the power for our first primitive civilizations came from our bodies. We used manual labor to power our early civilizations.

But eventually we found copper, tin and iron for better tools. Later, we discovered coal. Then we learned how to make steel and aluminum. Then we discovered oil and gas. We even found Uranium for nuclear power. Now humanity has the power to reach the moon.

Most of the high-powered sources of energy are highly toxic unless they are handled safely. They need to be processed in refineries. They need to be broken down into their useful elements or they do great damage.

Our Shadow Side

And the same is true of the high-powered Shadows inside each of us. We have kept them buried underground because they can do harm. Our anger can spill out as violence. Our fear can make us paranoid. Our grief can cripple us.

So we need safe places to process our shadows. And digging deep is a high-risk-high-reward situation. The diving equipment didn’t exist for Sigmund Freud to go diving down beneath the surface of the ocean to explore the iceberg. But if he could have gone down there, he would have soon reported that he was swimming with sharks.

We all have our internal sharks down there. And we have internal deposits of oil buried in our depths. We have our gems and we have our toxins. We can find gold or we can gush oil. You can’t be sure until you start digging.

So I believe it’s wise to seek some help if you’re going to dig deep. This isn’t a problem if you are just turning over the soil in your mind’s garden to unearth better microorganisms from the next layer down. It’s not a problem if you are just digging a new well for water. But the deeper you go, the more pressure things are under. So if the more superficial digging doesn’t work, you should be more careful about digging up things you might not be prepared to handle.

Ask Experienced Miners

Yes, you can find immense energy down there in the Shadow World. Enough energy to power your dreams. I’ve been facilitating that kind of work for three decades and I’ve seen it.

But you might want to benefit first from the experience of those who can predict what might be down there. Oil companies have become quite proficient in determining the depth, size and pressure of an oil deposit. So if you want to mine your deeper shadows, pick a shadow worker who has some way of determining what might be down there in your shadows ahead of time. Shadow workers can use a personality survey, or conduct an interview before the work begins. They can estimate from your description of your problem how deep the shadow might be. They won’t always be right, but they should at least know the worst things that can go wrong.

In the last five years, the concept of shadow and shadow work have become very popular. And there are now hundreds of coaches offering miraculous results from exploring your shadow. But if you’re going to go deep, pick a shadow worker who can demonstrate some knowledge about what to do with your shadows once they surface. Experienced shadow workers will be able to describe how they can help you. They can know how to safely process your crude shadows into useful energy. They should not force you to go deeper than you choose. They could care about the balance of your internal ecology. They should not sell you shadow work as the one solution to every problem just because it’s new.

Our civilization has gotten itself into trouble from using fossil fuels too much and too fast. And the same can be said about the deepest shadows inside us.

Balance

After being a kind of Shadow Work guru for the last 30 years, I have often seen the processing of my deepest shadows as THE way to fix all my problems. But I have come to realize that I’m not going to fix all my problems, nor heal all my shadows. Sometimes it’s important to focus back on the Surface World, where the sun is shining and the wind is blowing. Sunlight and wind are both renewable resources of energy. Just basking in the positive support of a friend or partner can help me grow in a steady way. Rather than fighting the winds of change, I can learn to simply ride them to new heights of awareness.

I have come to realize that it’s important to become a more balanced, well-rounded human being, even if I can’t wipe the slate clean of every shadow. I need to learn to simply accept some of my shadows as they are, and look to the folks who love me to help me out when I need help. I don’t need to get more and more energy forever. I just need enough to live together with everybody else.

And when I’m happier accepting my own shadows, I find I’m happier living in this world with everybody else’s.

Top 20 Things You Can Learn at Basic Facilitator Training

The Basic Facilitator Training, or BFT, is for people who want to learn about human nature, about themselves, and about how they can help people with troubling personal issues.

Here’s just some of the learning you’ll get.

YOUR SHADOW AS A FACILITATOR AND HOW TO USE IT

  1. Love your dark side. We all have a “dark side” — parts of us that are in shadow. Only those who learn to see their dark side without shame can use it to help others. Those who can’t see their dark side will be controlled by it.
  2. Start a lifetime of feeling better about yourself. Many of us fear the part of ourselves that wants to take control. That controlling part of us, however, is the same part of us that wants to learn to facilitate. What it really wants is to create safety, for us and for those we’re trying to help. You’ll learn why you needn’t feel ashamed of your inner facilitator and how you can use it to make your participant feel safe.

HOW TO SPOT MAGICIAN WOUNDS AND USE THE MAGICIAN TOOLS

  1. Reveal what somebody’s really saying. You’ll learn how to “mirror,” a way of listening that helps someone find clarity.
  2. Be amazed as Mistakes morph before your very eyes into The Best Strategies Available At The Time. You’ll learn how to help people get the gold out of their mistakes and how to help them transform regret into compassion.
  3. Change somebody’s life during dinner. You’ll learn the seven-step What’s At Risk process, which can help a person move safely through a personal obstacle within minutes.
  4. View yourself from the other side of the room. Until you’ve tried it, you won’t believe how much clarity and perspective you get from having your inner voices spoken by role-players while you watch from a distance. You’ll learn to “split out” a participant’s inner voices and then what to do with their inner tableau.
  5. Spot a group participant who’d rather be anywhere else than in your group. If you lead groups, you know that people sometimes come to groups with fear of the group experience. You’ll learn to spot them and how to safely handle their fear and bring them back into the group.
  6. Find your inner light switch. You’ll learn to “switch” an unwanted sensation into something you want, and how to help the person you’re facilitating do the same.

HOW TO SPOT SOVEREIGN WOUNDS AND USE THE SOVEREIGN TOOLS

  1. Sense when you’re getting set up for a fall. We all have “circuitry” for idealizing someone or something and then getting betrayed. You’ll learn about the idealization-betrayal circuit and what to do when someone’s idealizing you.
  2. Why some people deflect compliments. When someone can’t accept something good, it probably means there’s a risk involved. You’ll learn to recognize when a risk is appearing, and how to facilitate the process that helps them deal with it.
  3. Pull an angel out of thin air. You’ll learn how to recognize someone in need of support from an ideal being, and how to get it to them.

HOW TO SPOT LOVER WOUNDS AND USE THE LOVER TOOLS

  1. Remove a lump from someone’s throat, without surgery! When your participant wants to be free of an unwanted sensation in their body, the Metaphor Pull-Out process helps them pull it out.
  2. Talk to an adult who has just turned into a kid. There’s a special way of talking to somebody when they’re experiencing a Lover wound, developed by David Grove. You’ll learn how to use it and experience why it works so well.

HOW TO SPOT WARRIOR WOUNDS AND USE THE WARRIOR TOOLS

  1. What your “ego” really is and why it doesn’t deserve its bad rep. You’ll learn why your ego isn’t bad at all and why it’s essential to your sense of self.
  2. Give the power to the people. You’ll learn to recognize when a participant’s power is not available to them and how to help them regain control of it.

WHAT A SHAME-FREE CONTAINER IS LIKE

  1. Start creating a family of choice. The training environment is a shame-free place where you can be who you are. There’s simply no better learning environment. Many people come to feel a close bond with their fellow trainees that’s thicker than water. We all have a family of origin; we can also have a family of choice.
  2. Laugh about your family and what a corker life really is. You’ll learn one of Shadow Work’s best-kept secrets: that we laugh a lot when we’re together. When we find compassion for our wounds, we get a new perspective on human nature that’s both endearing and hilarious. Carl Jung was known for his wonderful laugh. Maybe you’ll become known for yours.

WHAT IT’S LIKE TO FACILITATE

  1. Watch some great acting. You’ll do more than study. You’ll practice. At first, you’ll practice on the trainers, some of the world’s best unpaid actors (uh…).
  2. Get hands-on experience. You’ll facilitate real processes in a team with other trainees, with the trainers coaching you in a supportive learning environment. Shadow Work trainers are known for their affirming way of giving feedback.

HOW GOOD THIS WORK FEELS

And the number one thing you’ll learn at the BFT:

  1. Something surprisingly good about yourself. After you’ve learned and practiced the processes, you’ll do a piece of your own work. It will give you an opportunity to “feel from the inside-out” one of the processes you’ve learned to facilitate. You might do Sovereign work and feel what it’s like to get, and give, unconditional love. You might do Warrior work and break your personal record for yards rushing. You might do Magician work and learn about the risks that have been standing in your way. You might do Lover work and get rid of a physical symptom.

Whatever kind of work you do, you’ll resolve an issue that’s been troubling you, perhaps for years.

CoDevelopment: Laying the Tracks for More Love and Trust.

The word “Co-Development” is not in the dictionary.  But we like that because the word has no baggage.  We can define it for ourselves.  

CoDevelopment is a word we’re adding to our Shadow Work jargon because it describes something special about our work.  CoDevelopment is actually like the glue that holds Shadow Work together.  It helps to produce the safety people experience at a Shadow Work event because it contributes to the mom-and-pop balance of energies we present.  CoDevelopment is at the core of our practice.

CoDevelopment contains a unique way of collaborating with a partner or co-facilitator.  It requires us to dig into our own shadows and process them.  In so doing, it co-creates a solution that’s been forged in the fire of our interchange.  The magic is actually in the way we polarize, process and then co-produce a unique result.  Rather than a simple compromise, CoDevelopment creates a third alternative that’s more loving and more powerful than either of our opposing viewpoints.  It generates a safer field. 

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and right-doing there is a field. I’ll meet you there.”  -Rumi 

If you watch old couples talking, they often seem to be fighting about things — but if you look more closely, they might not be actually fighting, they might just be expressing strong opposing opinions.  Differentiation is an important part of evolution.  But in humans, it’s even more intentional.  We don’t just polarize in the way our bodies adapt, but in the way, we think and feel and present ourselves.  And we also present our polarizations to each other.  And, hopefully, we do this in a way that doesn’t end the entire co-development process.  If someone says, “You’re just wrong, this is the way it is”, then co-development is OVER right there. 

THE PROCESS: 

CoDevelopment is really a whole process.  It can be described by the three “P’s”: 

  1. Polarize
  2. Process
  3. Produce

Let’s suppose Cliff and Vicki are talking on the phone with a man who’s a potential coaching client, and he says,  

“In my work, I want to go really, really deep.  But I also want to keep things really positive.  I’m not into that negative, small-minded kind of thinking that some people get into when they are crying about how wounded they got. Let’s just keep everything on the  sunny side, ok?”

This is what we call an Inflated Sovereign Wound.   

But suppose Cliff and Vicki have polarized reactions to this man and to his statement.  They often do.  Speaking about it after the call, Cliff might say, “Wow, he just wants to bypass the deep stuff by calling it ‘negative.’  That won’t work.  We have to confront him on this.”  

But Vicki might say, “I think he’s just been rejected a lot.  Couldn’t we just hold him in his wound and see if it all works out during the session?” 

1. POLARIZE

Cliff and Vicki start going back and forth, even arguing about whether to confront him or just hold him patiently.  

2. PROCESS

Both Cliff and Vicki are uncomfortable with their conflicting perspectives, so they decide to sleep on it. That night, they each see a shadow in themselves that tainted their vision of this man.   

  • Cliff sees himself in this guy, and he doesn’t like this tendency in himself.  So he reacted in a more confrontational way.  So Cliff did a piece of anger work until he reached a little breakthrough.  Having processed his anger through, he could now tolerate the man’s inflation more easily and could sense the opportunity for a different approach. 
  • Vicki saw her younger brother in this man, and growing up she always just supported her brother.  So she reacted to this man in a more accepting way.  So she did some work around supporting her brother and remembered her brother didn’t always appreciate the help.  So she became more willing to challenge this man.   

3. PRODUCE

Then Cliff and Vicki come together, each with a deeper awareness about themselves and about the client.  From this place, they see a new way to work with him which incorporates their deeper perspectives. In the end, they tell him,  

“We can see a way for you to go even deeper than you are currently imagining.  We can take you deeper than deep.  But this will challenge you to take some even deeper risks than you have taken before. Are you up for that?”  

He rises to the challenge and says yes.  So they work with him until he comes up against his deeper wounds.  Then he says,  

“Boy this is getting really negative!”  

But then Cliff and Vicki can say,  

“Well that’s one of the bigger risks we challenged you to take.”   

This puts the man in a position to face some negative things while being supported to go even deeper than before.  This approach has incorporated both sides of Cliff and Vicki’s polarization, and yet it’s a new field, a fresh approach. 

And this is CoDevelopment in action. The key is to “do your own work first.”  It’s to dig into your own shadows and find a way through them.  When you do, you see better because you are coming from a deeper place.  You aren’t just compromising in a rational way.  You are CoDeveloping by working with your own emotions as well.   

Shadow Work contains many tools that can help you process your reactions more quickly and easily when you are CoDeveloping with a partner.  

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: 

We believe that when people process something emotionally they then see it differently.  Human beings are not “thinking beings that happen to feel”, but rather they are “FEELING beings that happen to THINK.”  So to get a really deeper result, you need to process your emotions as well as your thoughts.  

You see this very clearly on Shadow Work carpets, where people go through processes.  When they get down to their emotions, and their emotions change, they start seeing themselves very differently.  They will often see the dynamics that have been plaguing them in a new, more positive light.   

CoDevelopment gives you another way to look at how you collaborate.  You probably know how to polarize.  That comes naturally.  But how do you process your own reactions when you are at odds with a partner?  How vulnerable can you let yourself be?  How far are you willing to go to process your own stuff in order to reach a better solution?   

You probably CoDevelop better on some issues than others. When you are having difficulty, you might say,  

 “I know I’m right.” “I’ve got this.” “I’ll take it from here.” 

Or,  

  “I don’t care, let’s just do it your way.” 

While these might be solutions in some cases, they are not CoDevelopment.  They lack the emotional processing to find a deeper solution.   

Shadow Work has been designed around the practice of CoDevelopment in a number of ways:   

  • We insist on having two facilitators for every process because the best facilitation is CoDeveloped between two people who have been doing their own work relative to the facilitation in which they are partnering. 
  • We insist on having two trainers at every Shadow Work Facilitator Training or Coaching Training.   
  • The Shadow Work model itself has been forged through the process of CoDevelopment between Cliff and Vicki.  Before he found Vicki, Cliff Codeveloped the Shadow Work model with his previous partners.  CoDevelopment was built into Shadow Work from the beginning.   
  • The Shadow Work model itself highlights the importance of seeing the paradoxes that exist in every process.  In this case, it’s not two people Co-Developing, but two paradoxical approaches that need to be ironed out within the brain of each facilitator.   
    • Should I offer some theory now, or plunge the participant into something more experiential?  
    • Should I follow the participant’s urge to be independent now, or bring in the need for connection?   
    • Should I support the participant’s quest in life, or highlight the need for security?   
  • The Shadow Work model talks about each facilitator viewing the situation with both eyes because that provides the best depth perception. 
  • Certified Shadow Work Facilitators are required to come together to “do their own work” every two years to stay certified.  This means we must all learn to grow by CoDeveloping with our shadows. 

If you learn to facilitate Shadow Work, you will need to learn CoDevelopment, also.  If you are leading any kind of organization, it becomes important to CoDevelop with someone else when dealing with the people in the organization.  CoDevelopment becomes like the glue that helps to hold the organization together.   

CoDevelopment is actually a generic version of good parenting.  And since parenting is a universal imprint on all people, CoDevelopment becomes a universally important strategy for helping people in the family dynamics which organizations contain.   

Until now, we didn’t have our own word for this cornerstone of Shadow Work, but now we do.

When Negative Thoughts Get in the Way

WE ALL HAVE ONE!

We all have one, a voice that expresses criticism or frustration, disapprove of our actions. It might sound like “what’s wrong with you”, “why can’t you get it together”, “that was stupid”, “they will find out you don’t know enough”.

At best these negative thoughts are just present like background noise, and at worst they might paralyze you, prevent you from a successful career, a healthy relationship and may even lead to depression.

The good news is: you have the power to change these negative thoughts. You were not born with these negative thoughts. Below are some ways to begin to disrupt them so that you can start building new, more positive messages.

STEP 1: BECOME AWARE.

No matter how strong this voice seems, the act of noticing the voice begins the shift away from their impact on you. You cannot change what you are not aware of.

One way to become aware is to just sit with your thoughts and watch them. Imagine the thoughts being like water in a river, just flowing by you. The goal here is to notice, not to catch the thought.

In this step, just focus your awareness on the facts and messages of the voice. Don’t let your mind wander into the analysis of “why” you have this voice right now, and don’t allow yourself to argue with the voice. For now, just notice that you have a voice.

Selfish Spirituality

I used to call myself Moonbeam.  I was a real Flower Child.  When people asked me where I was from, I would say “The Universe.”    

Now, I was on a significant spiritual journey, an honorable quest, to “let go of the ego” or perhaps even “annihilate the ego”.  And I discovered that there’s clearly some value in letting go of your ego at times.  But letting go of your ego can become like a dog chasing its tail.  I once had a teacher stop me dead in my tracks by asking me:

“And exactly who is it that is trying to annihilate the ego?”. 

“Ooooh…I guess that would be my ego,” I had to admit sheepishly. 

In Shadow Work®, we believe there are 4 main energies that make up a human being, one of which is responsible for sustaining your ego.  Scientists name these genetic pre-dispositions as Novelty-Seeking, Harm Avoidance, Dependence and Persistence.   Everyone has some mix of these four genetic drives.  And your particular mix plays a big part in determining your unique personality.

Your genetic pre-disposition called Persistence has the special function of creating and maintaining your personal sense of self, your ego. 

Your ego is the mechanism that anchors all the other parts of you and gives you agency to act in the world.  Without an ego, you can’t do much in the world.  That’s why we like to say that “Ego is job one.”  If your ego is well built you can be an effective agent of power, love, wisdom and service in the world.  So if you are looking for someone who can perform well under pressure, get someone with a big ego.  That’s why you want an airline pilot with a big ego.  That’s why you want a brain surgeon with a big ego.  Ego is needed to get things done.   

An unhealthy ego, on the other hand, leads to a shaky performance.   That’s why as Moonbeam I had trouble making money.  That’s why you wouldn’t want Moonbeam flying your plane.

A weak ego will cause you to belittle others, in order to temporarily boost your cardboard identity.  Or, in the other extreme, the weak ego with cause you to become a meek, indecisive wallflower who is afraid to take up space by speaking or acting with power.  Both of these weak egos are like a container with cracks and holes through which the energy to get things done simply leaks out onto the ground.

Here’s one of my favorite metaphors to illustrate the value of building a healthy ego.

Your ego is a lot like the earth, orbiting around the sun.  The earth has its own momentum which wants to break out of its orbit and follow its own straight path into the universe, never to return.   You get caught up in this perilous momentum when you feel separate from Spirit (or your Higher Self, or the Divine, or Source or whatever you want to call it).

When you get over-confident (or you start to see yourself as spiritually superior, or you believe you’ve got it all figured out) you are like a planet on a hubristic trajectory, heading directly away from the sun, and therefore away from the center of your own survival.  You probably call this “being selfish.” 

When you are like a planet trying to speed off into infinity, you can, indeed, find some help in the teachings that recommend a dissolution of the ego.   Getting outside your own ego can offer some incredible life-altering gems.  Shifting your focus off yourself and towards something higher is an important step.

But you can overdo it.  Consider for a moment what would happen to the earth if it lost all of its own individual momentum.  Suppose the earth abandoned its own trajectory and surrendered completely to the pull of the sun.  The earth would fall into the sun.  It would absorbed completely by the sun.  And while the sun might become incrementally bigger, all the millions of species of life on earth would perish. 

In a solar system where the sun is powerfully pulling everything in towards itself, the opposing force of the earth’s individual momentum is the only thing protecting life on earth. 

Even though the sun and the earth are essentially one, (all matter is made of molecules that came from stars like the sun) there are millions of reasons to retain a sense of distinctness.  This distinctness allows us to experience a unique essence. 

Like the earth in this story, our ego sometimes has a desire to go off on its own, in the opposite direction of Spirit.  But if our individual momentum can be balanced with the pulling force of Spirit, the self can orbit around Spirit in much the same way as the earth orbits around the sun.  This balance is the most fertile and productive formula yet to be discovered by science.  The human species alone has almost 8 billion unique expressions of Spirit, no two alike, but all manifestations of the same essence.  Each individual ego is a container capable of shaping Spirit into a never-before-seen art form.

Many mythologies present this miracle as the reason life was created, so that the one consciousness could experience its own depth and breadth through a full range of manifestations.

Like light refracting through a prism to disseminate the visible color spectrum, Spirit can refract itself thought your ego, which allows you to fulfill your purpose as one of the most complex and beautiful masterpieces of all.S

Confessions of a Life Coach

I wept today.

Deeply. Old grief appeared and I knew I must release it to be whole, to be healed, to allow joy back in. With the work I do, I know holding on, pushing it aside and ignoring the heartache will just cause more pain. I know too much now to let things just fester.

I honor my feelings. They are great teachers. And so I entered into a sacred space to explore my heart and heal. To move some blocked energy so I can feel free.

You see, my back has been hurting for a few weeks now. I could blame the new exercise program, the sitting on the couch with my computer with not the best posture, or the loss, which I know is the real culprit.

I have been here before. Physical pain appearing, and having me believe there is something wrong with me, that my herniations are kicking up — and you know what? There is something wrong but it isn’t my back. My heart aches.

Is it okay to share this with you? I am a life coach. I guide people. Aren’t I supposed to have my shit together? What will you think? Will you judge me for being weak?

That is exactly why I am sharing this. Perhaps you too have some sadness in you that festers and holds you back in some way. I think vulnerability is strength and not weakness, and I hope as you read what I did to move this grief, you too can release some of what you hold so you too can feel free.

WHAT’S AT RISK FOR YOU TO FEEL?

It is not weakness to feel. To feel is to be human and it is a blessing. What’s at risk for you to feel?

This is the work. To step into a place of truth in the name of transformation. To heal. To embrace what is so, and then move forward feeling lighter and stronger.

So I stepped into the pain — to understand it, to track it and then have the pain lift.

MY PROCESS

This was my process.

First I asked my self what I wanted. And I said I wanted to feel whole, loved and connected. And then I identified the part of me that felt alone, scared, and deeply sad. I also found a part of me that is really pissed off.

I stepped into the vulnerable part and wept. I spoke out loud and said — I feel so sad. I feel so alone. And I cried my eyes out thinking about the loss of my dad, the loss of my son, the loss of my marriage, the loss of my recent partner. I dove into the grief and I let it run its course.

But then something else appeared. The anger.

And so I moved into that part and voiced how angry I was that my father died and I had to feel so alone. How angry I was that my son doesn’t speak to me — which as I voiced it, I heard myself say he discarded me (wow, that’s big) and how he can’t acknowledge the loving mom I had been to him all those years, and I went on with how angry I was that my husband wasn’t able to step into the fire with me and save our marriage. And how angry that I had to step away from the recent relationship because it wasn’t a good fit anymore.

I let it rip. I didn’t censor. I had to let the anger pour out. I had been holding it, not wanting to feel it, scared that if I opened this faucet the damn would explode and I would be a mess.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE

There are consequences when we hold ourselves down and don’t express our feelings. Our anger and sadness come out sideways and hurt others and, yes, sometimes ourselves. But by moving through them this way, it is safe. I was alone processing but typically you would be facilitated by a trained Shadow Work® Facilitator or Coach to do this. I share this with you because I want you to know it is ok to feel, to listen to your inner truth, your heart. I share this because I want you to know you are not alone.

And so I continued. I brought in a part that could love me and soothe me. If you remember, I wanted to feel connected and loved, so I needed support in some way. A part that knows how special I am and could offer me words that would help me. And this part held me as I wept.

This part had words like: You are never alone. So many people love you. It’s ok to weep, just know you are loved. You are taken care of. Your father and grandmother are right here with you. Be in stillness so you can feel them with you. Loving you. Seeing you for your beauty.

And this part continued with such beautiful words. I was giving myself a big hug as I listened to this wise woman who knows the truth. Knows that I am ok and that I am surrounded by love. And great reminders of who I really am.

I calmed down. My breathing relaxed and yes my back also felt better.

I HONOR YOUR TRUTH

I share my journey with you because I want you to know you are not alone. You are a beautiful soul having a human experience that sometimes hurts. I hope the message you receive today is to feel. To allow yourself to flow. To be with your truth and not to shut it down. And to reach out for support if you have challenges in this arena.

We are not taught in this culture how to honor our feelings — how to work with them. We have been taught to judge them as weak or scary.

What if there is power in owning your truth? How much more life-force might you experience if you accepted all of you? That is my hope for you.

From my heart to yours, I honor your truth, your light and the beautiful soul you are.

What Does the Jester Want?

“I am completely baffled, Cindy,” says Betsy as I give her a massage. “I have these 10 pounds that I can’t quite get rid of, no matter what I do.”

And of course I am thinking that I would love to have only 10 pounds to have to try to remove. But that was a momentary lapse into female envy.

She launches into a list of the things she’s done and how it just never works. Massage clients really do ask me these kinds of questions. This one in particular is a composite of questions and stories from several people that I’ve blended so that no one is trackable.

“Do you have any ideas about what I should do?” she says.

Apparently massage therapists can also divine what a person should do to magically lose 10 pounds. I scroll through all the spectacular fails I personally have had on the same subject and decide to try some tools that actually helped me.


DIFFERENT TERRITORY

“What’s bad about losing weight?” I ask.

She is taken aback at such a question. I’m thinking that it’s just a fun way to ask about the risks. In Shadow Work, a lot of the territory we work is about wants and risks.

After several minutes of wondering aloud about what it might cost her if she lost weight, Betsy suddenly realizes that her daughter always wants to have a snack with her before going to bed. And it’s always strawberry ice cream. Her daughter is about to graduate from high school and soon Betsy will have an empty nest. And then it was like the light came on.

“I don’t want to lose that time with her, and I feel like such a party pooper if I don’t join her.”

I’m thinking, “That was easy”. But after a little bit, she pops out with, “But my body sort of aches and bothers me. I don’t feel at ease. My doctor says that there’s nothing wrong with me, but I just don’t feel comfortable.”

It’s not my job to diagnose things for people, and most people don’t like to be reminded that their age might have something to do with the aches, so I’m thinking she’s probably asking for some other kind of help. Like a story.


IN THE KINGDOM

“How about if you imagine a kingdom,” I say. And we start the process of developing what the kingdom in her internal world looks like. After that unfolds, I say, “So now, if you could imagine your body exactly how you’ve described it to me, as a character or a thing in this kingdom, who or what would it be?”

For Shadow Work® facilitators, this is a way to get a part out. Cliff Barry has told me that he often uses his own body aches and pains as sources of information by creating the parts that they play and getting the messages from them. It’s a very useful tool.

“For some silly reason, I see a jester,” she says.

“What’s he or she like?” I say.

“He’s all dressed up and ready to perform.”

“Where is he and what is he doing?”

“He’s locked up in the stable. And he’s banging on the walls, but nobody comes to let him out.”

“How does he feel about that?”

“Sad. Dejected. Like nobody loves him or is delighted to see him.” She muses for a bit. “He just wants some attention.”

“Who does he want to give him attention?” I ask.

“The Queen.”

“Where’s the Queen?”

“She’s up in a tower looking over the land. She’s a really nice queen and she loves her people.”

“Does she know about the jester being locked up in the stable?”

“No. She doesn’t.”

“So who does?”

“The butler does.”

“Do the Queen and the butler talk?”

“Oh, yes.”

“So now that you know that the jester is sad and dejected in the stable, and that the Queen doesn’t realize it but the butler knows, what do you want to have happen to the jester?”


THE BIG WANT

“The butler needs to tell the Queen, and the Queen will send for the jester and ask him to perform for her and the royal family, and she will clap for him and tell him she does care about him and not let him get locked up anymore.” She continues this description of what she sees happening in her mind and doesn’t realize that tears are slipping down her face.

“I haven’t loved my body very much, you know.”

“I hear you,” I say.

“And all it wants is for me to pay attention to it and love it.”

And so ends the massage session with her decision to take an Epsom salts bath with essential oils and to drink more water. I might have suggested that option but she was listening to the jester and thought it up for herself.

There are lots of ways to think about a jester wanting attention and delight and what it says to a person about what her body might need. But the real gain was what Betsy wanted and needed for herself; not what I might see would be a good plan. And if she wants to explore the story further, she can ask herself who in the kingdom might have wanted to lock the jester up and why. Fun thoughts like that.

This story is somewhat true and somewhat fiction. Like most stories. The human imagination is astonishing, and I’ve had a parade of kings, queens, children, dragons, lethal mists, bunnies, magicians, cloaked dark men, talking trees, scribes, birds, scrolls, quicksand, a blue womb and Gandalf, cross my story line and my massage table. And now I’ve met a jester who wants attention.

Makes sense to me.
