Press Release
Company Background

Shadow Work founder Cliff BarryAs many of our readers heard from us last week in a promotional email, a new book came out on the four archetypes for a business audience, Erica Fox's Winning from Within, released September 2013. We promised an interview with Shadow Work® founder Cliff Barry comparing the way the archetypes are presented in Erica's book with the way they're used in Shadow Work®. We caught up with Cliff in rain-flooded Boulder, Colorado.

AB: How does Winning from Within introduce the archetypes to a business audience?

Cliff: Although Erica consulted with me about the four archetypes as we use them in Shadow Work®, she has put her own spin on them. She's been influenced by her experience in the business world and what works there, and also by what she's learned about the archetypes in settings other than Shadow Work®.

Winning from Within by Erica Ariel Fox AB: She refers to the Sovereign and Magician by different names.

Cliff: Yes, she calls the Sovereign the Dreamer, the Magician the Thinker, and the Lover and Warrior by the same names we use.

AB: And are there other differences?

Cliff: I would say Erica sees the Sovereign somewhat differently than we do, and that's probably the biggest difference for us in Shadow Work®. For example, she thinks of what we call Fostering as a function of the Lover rather than as a function of the Sovereign.

Another big difference is that, on top of those four, which she calls the Big Four, she names three others: the Lookout, the Voyager, and the Captain.

Erica Ariel Fox, author of Winning from WithinAB: So there are seven archetypes altogether.

That's right. She calls them Negotiators. The book is called Winning from Within because Erica recommends that people work with their internal negotiators as a part of any external negotiation they might be involved in; she's a lecturer at Harvard Law School's Program on Negotiation. Her ability to work with people in business is remarkable. She has an ability to break things down into their fundamentals so they can be quickly understood and applied in a way that's really useful and impactful.

AB: What most impressed you about the book?

Cliff: It's very well written. Erica is really good at having an example for every single thing she says, an example that anybody could understand, in very clear language. It's beautifully written.

AB: What kind of impact do you foresee the book having?

Cliff: I believe her book is going to get a lot of people thinking about themselves in terms of the four directions, which I anticipate to be a deepening of reflection for them, especially for people who haven't done a lot of inner work before, and it will help open them up to their archetypal energies.

AB: How would you characterize the impact of four-directional thinking?

Cliff: It's been my experience that when a person first encounters the four directions, they're sort of gobsmacked for a while, as they start thinking about what each part of them is saying and doing. And it gets them thinking in ways they've never thought before, about what it means to be vulnerable, and to be compassionate, and to see their life decisions in perspective, and to have good boundaries. Any good four-directional model opens people up to more depth in themselves, and I think Erica's book is going to do that. She's going to get a lot of people started.

Also, Erica isn't one of these leaders who tell others to look inside and then don't do it themselves. She has shown up to do her own work, in Shadow Work® and in other ways as well. That's a wonderful thing to find in this world.

Winning from Within, A Breakthrough Method for Leading, Living, and Lasting Change by Erica Ariel Fox is scheduled for release on Tuesday, September 24, 2013. The book can be pre-ordered from in hardcover and for Kindle, at in hardcover and for Nook, and wherever books are sold. [Editor's note: As we go to press, the Kindle edition is free with a 30-day free trial of Audible.)
